Amazon’s Project GiveBack and ISV Team Culture have announced a collaboration with the New York Blood Center to host an employee-only blood drive at JFK27. This initiative comes amid an ongoing blood shortage in New York.
According to the internal announcement, the blood drive is scheduled for August 26, 2025, at Amazon JFK27. The organizers noted that summer often brings an increase in trauma cases alongside a sharp decline in donations, leading to a dangerous shortage. They aim to recruit 384 donors, emphasizing that each donation can potentially save up to three lives.
The announcement further explained that each summer, blood donations decrease by approximately 20% across the United States. This decline is attributed mainly to school closures and vacation schedules. It coincides with a rise in trauma-related injuries from outdoor activities and car accidents during what is known as the “100 Deadly Days of Summer.”
A single blood donation can be divided into red blood cells, plasma, and platelets, allowing one donor to assist multiple patients. Approximately two-thirds of donated blood is used for treating medical conditions such as cancer, anemia, and blood disorders. Nearly a third supports surgeries and emergencies, including childbirth.
Founded in 1964, New York Blood Center Enterprises (NYBCe) is one of the largest nonprofit blood centers in the United States. It provides lifesaving blood and stem cell products to hospitals nationwide. NYBCe also engages in innovative research in transfusion medicine and cellular therapies while training future leaders in these critical health fields.
