Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Mar. 26 the reopening of the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Todd Haimes Theatre after a $24 million renovation project. The upgrades are described as the most significant to the historic Broadway venue in decades, aiming to modernize facilities, expand accessibility, and enhance its role for artistic and community programming.

The project is supported by nearly $3 million from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), Empire State Development, and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY). According to officials, these investments support jobs, promote economic growth in Manhattan’s Theater District, and help maintain one of New York City’s prominent cultural destinations.

“The curtain rises on a new chapter at the Todd Haimes Theatre as this transformative renovation supports greater accessibility to the arts for all,” Governor Hochul said. “Our unparalleled theater district brings visitors from all around the world, all throughout the year. Iconic venues like this drive tourism, boost our economic strength and make New York State the global capital of arts and culture.”

The NYSCA contributed $1.1 million for improvements including restoration of historic interiors, electrical updates to facades, elevator upgrades, accessible restrooms renovations, improved safety systems along with new seating and carpeting. A Bluetooth-enabled assistive listening system was installed for Deaf or Hard of Hearing patrons.

DASNY provided $1 million towards renovating Cadillac Lounge as a multiuse space for events while Empire State Development granted $896,000 through its Regional Economic Development Council initiative toward updating Mustang Hub with accessibility features and enhanced amenities on its third floor.

State Senator Liz Krueger said she has witnessed how Roundabout revitalized city stages over three decades: “With enhanced accessibility and revamped multi-purpose spaces…the renovated Todd Haimes Theatre will advance Todd’s legacy to better serve over 400,000 theatre goers…every year.” Assemblymember Tony Simone called it “a powerful reminder that investing in arts means investing in New York’s economic and cultural future.” NYSCA Executive Director Erika Mallin said: “Great art belongs to everyone…we are proud to support…renovations to make an inclusive visitor experience accessible to all.” NYSCA Chair Patrick Willingham added: “Todd Haimes was a visionary who understood that art doesn’t just inspire a community—it builds one.” Empire State Development President Hope Knight noted that such investments strengthen “a critical component” of New York’s economy.

Built in 1911 as one of Broadway’s historic venues, these improvements ensure continued service while preserving architectural character. The state has also invested in initiatives like tax credits supporting more than 190 productions since COVID-19 recovery efforts began—adding over $2.5 billion to New York’s economy—and programs making hundreds of thousands tickets available at lower cost.

Scott Ellis, Interim Artistic Director at Roundabout Theatre Company said: “Over 40 years…Todd Haimes brought Roundabout from…the basement…all…the way…to Broadway…I am so proud…to welcome audiences back…to an accessible…venue.”

Broader implications suggest that strategic investments like this keep Broadway vibrant while expanding access for diverse audiences—a key part of maintaining New York City as a global center for live theater.
