Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Apr. 17 the start of construction on the Haffen Park Pool Complex in the Bronx, supported by a $5 million grant from the New York Statewide Investment in More Swimming (NY SWIMS) initiative. The project aims to modernize and improve accessibility at the facility, expanding opportunities for safe aquatic recreation for local residents.

The new pool complex is intended to provide updated amenities and ensure that families have access to high-quality recreational spaces. NY SWIMS, administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY) and overseen by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, offers matching grants to help communities build or upgrade swimming facilities across New York.

The $13.4 million project will reconstruct key elements including bathhouse buildings, pool infrastructure, locker rooms, showers, restrooms, lighting, and mechanical systems. Additional upgrades will create a fully accessible entrance and pathways throughout the facility as well as improved landscaping and flexible public spaces while preserving historic design elements.

“Investments like NY SWIMS are helping communities expand access to safe places for families to get outside and swim,” Governor Hochul said. “This project at Haffen Park will transform a long-standing recreational center into a modern, accessible facility that will continue to serve Bronx families for generations to come. Through our Unplug and Play initiative, we are continuing to create opportunities for New Yorkers to stay active, connect with their communities and enjoy the outdoors.” DASNY President Robert J. Rodriguez said that “the reconstruction of the Haffen Park Pool Complex will provide a more accessible, resilient and welcoming space for Bronx residents.” Tricia Shimamura from NYC Parks said this is “about delivering a safe, accessible and welcoming space where New Yorkers can cool off…and learn important water safety skills.” Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie called it “a significant milestone” towards revitalizing Haffen Park.

Other officials echoed support for expanding access through investments like NY SWIMS. State Senator Jose M. Serrano said he was “thrilled about the $5 million dollar grant,” while Senator Jamaal T. Bailey highlighted how parks are central gathering places: “By revitalizing this infrastructure we are ensuring that Bronx residents have access to high-quality facilities they deserve.” Council Member Kevin C. Riley noted nearly $70 million has been invested in Haffen Park improvements overall.

According to state officials quoted in today’s announcement release,
NY SWIMS has awarded $200 million supporting 57 projects statewide so far; its second round provided over $63 million toward 21 projects with additional local contributions leveraged.
