Governor Kathy Hochul has reaffirmed New York State’s commitment to supporting veterans and their families, focusing on programs that expand access to higher education and financial aid. This announcement comes in recognition of Veterans Day, highlighting the state’s ongoing efforts to honor veterans by providing resources and opportunities for educational advancement.
The state recently expanded eligibility for the Veterans Tuition Award (VTA), allowing more veterans to receive tuition coverage at colleges and universities across New York. The VTA offers eligible veterans awards up to the full cost of undergraduate tuition at State University of New York (SUNY) institutions, as well as other approved colleges, universities, and vocational training programs.
Other financial aid initiatives include the Military Enhanced Recognition Incentive and Tribute (MERIT) Scholarship, which covers attendance costs for children, spouses, and dependents of New York residents who were severely disabled or lost in military service. The Regents Awards for Children of Deceased and Disabled Veterans provide annual awards for undergraduate students whose parents served during wartime and were either killed, severely disabled, taken prisoner, or declared missing in action. Additionally, the Veterans Education (Vet Ed) program supports education and training programs that allow eligible beneficiaries to maximize federal GI Bill benefits.
Throughout the year, New York organizes events designed to help veterans and their families understand available education benefits. An upcoming event co-hosted by the Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC) and the NYC Department of Veterans’ Services will offer information on financial aid programs along with personalized guidance.
Governor Hochul stated: “Veterans and their families deserve more than recognition — they deserve meaningful support that helps them thrive. By expanding financial aid, strengthening resources, and celebrating their contributions through events across the state, we are ensuring New York remains a leader in supporting those who served so they can build brighter and more successful futures.”
Dr. Guillermo Linares, President of HESC said: “New York’s veterans and their families have given so much in service to our country. They’ve put it all on the line to protect our freedoms and our way of life. At HESC, we’re proud to honor that service by helping them continue their journey through higher education. Supporting those who’ve sacrificed for us is one of the most meaningful ways we can give back.”
Viviana M. DeCohen, Commissioner of the Department of Veterans’ Services commented: “Education is one of the most powerful forces for transformation in a Veteran’s life. It opens doors to new careers, strengthens families, and honors the skills, discipline, and leadership that our incredible Service Members bring home. Under Governor Kathy Hochul’s leadership…New York continues to ensure that Veterans and Military Families have clear…pathways to success in the classroom and beyond…to help all who served turn their aspirations into achievement.”
James Hendon from NYC Department of Veterans’ Services added: “New York honors service best by opening doors. When a veteran or surviving family member can afford a SUNY or CUNY classroom…that’s stability today and mobility tomorrow….help yourself by using these benefits —and help one more veteran do the same.”
SUNY Chancellor John B. King Jr., CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez; State Education Commissioner Betty A. Rosa; as well as State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky also voiced support for these measures.
