Governor Hochul orders flags at half-staff to honor late trooper Mark A. Ondus

Flags on state government buildings in New York will be flown at half-staff on October 15 to honor retired New York State Police Trooper Mark A. Ondus, following a directive from Governor Kathy Hochul. Trooper Ondus died on October 9, 2025, from an illness related to his work at the World Trade Center site after the September 11 attacks.

Governor Hochul stated, “I am directing flags across New York State to be lowered in honor of retired New York State Police Trooper Mark A. Ondus. Today, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Trooper Ondus’ family and loved ones as we honor his life and memory. Trooper Ondus served the community when New York needed heroes the most, and we are deeply grateful for his steadfast service, dedication, and sacrifice.”

Trooper Ondus retired on January 20, 2021, after serving with the New York State Police for 26 years. He is survived by his wife Tammy, his sons Charles, Sebastian, Nicholas, and his daughter Tauni.
