Governor Kathy Hochul has called on residents across New York to be cautious as a mix of winter weather is expected to impact various regions starting Wednesday. Forecasts indicate that Western New York, the Finger Lakes, Central New York, Mohawk Valley, and the Capital Region will experience snow, rain, and freezing rain beginning in the morning. While temperatures are projected to stay above freezing, officials warn that these conditions could make Wednesday evening travel dangerous.

Governor Hochul emphasized the importance of preparedness: “We are almost to spring, but New Yorkers can’t let their guard down just yet when it comes to staying safe in winter weather,” she said. “Ice is dangerous — take it slow when driving and build in extra travel time for yourself between stops. Safety is our number one priority, and I continue to urge everyone to monitor their local forecasts.”

The Hudson Valley is forecasted to receive rain with higher elevations possibly seeing ice accumulation. Authorities are also monitoring the potential for flooding caused by snowmelt and rainfall. There may be additional winter weather affecting the state from Friday through Sunday; however, forecasts remain uncertain at this time.

State agencies have begun preparations ahead of the storm:

– The Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services is coordinating with local emergency managers and readying supplies.
– The Department of Transportation has more than 3,700 supervisors and operators prepared for snow and ice response efforts statewide. Crews will staff facilities around the clock during the event.
– The Thruway Authority has over 690 operators available and has stockpiled more than 102,500 tons of salt. Drivers are reminded that plows travel at reduced speeds for safety.
– The Department of Public Service is working with utilities to ensure electric service reliability. About 5,500 utility workers are positioned statewide for repairs if needed.
– State Police will increase patrols in affected areas as conditions worsen.
– The Department of Environmental Conservation is monitoring conditions and preparing resources in case they are needed for emergencies or environmental protection.

Residents are advised to enable government emergency alerts on their phones and sign up for real-time updates by texting their county or borough name to 333111.

Officials recommend several safety measures: monitor local forecasts regularly; avoid unnecessary travel; equip vehicles with emergency supplies; keep mobile devices charged; maintain a safe distance from snowplows; dress appropriately for cold weather; limit outdoor work when possible; and follow guidelines for power outages.

The public can find real-time traffic information at www.511NY.org or by calling 511. Updates on park hours can be found at parks.ny.gov or through the NY State Parks Explorer app.

For those experiencing homelessness during Code Blue conditions (when temperatures or wind chills fall below 32 degrees), local social services districts must provide access to shelter with extended hours as required by state regulation.

In case of emergencies while hiking or traveling outdoors during storms or extreme cold, individuals should call 9-1-1 or request Forest Ranger assistance at 1-833-NYS-RANGERS.
