In a statement released on August 7, 2025, Governor Kathy Hochul addressed recent federal funding cuts to New York’s counterterrorism and public safety programs. The governor said, “In the aftermath of last week’s horrific mass shooting, Donald Trump just stripped $87 million from New York’s counterterrorism and public safety programs.”

Governor Hochul expressed concern about the impact of these cuts on law enforcement. She stated, “These cuts will have a detrimental effect on key law enforcement agencies and their ability to keep New Yorkers safe, respond swiftly to threats, combat drug trafficking and investigate criminal networks.”

She called for immediate action from national leaders. “I call on Congress and the White House to act quickly to reverse this dangerous decision and restore essential funding. New York will continue doing everything in our power to protect public safety — but we need the federal government to meet its responsibilities and maintain the funding necessary to keep all Americans safe.”

The loss of $87 million in federal support could affect efforts by state agencies that rely on these funds for terrorism prevention and emergency response.
