For the first time, a Marist University alumnus played in the Super Bowl and made history. Jason Myers, a 2013 graduate who now serves as placekicker for the Seattle Seahawks, set a new Super Bowl record by making five field goals and contributing 17 points to Seattle’s 29-13 victory over the New England Patriots.
Marist alumni and supporters followed Myers’ performance closely, showing their support on social media throughout the game.
In an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America following the game, Myers described his mindset: “Before the game, I was expecting to feel more nerves,” he said. “I just knew that whenever my time was called, I was going to be ready for that moment.”
Myers’ strong performance led some to consider him for Super Bowl MVP—a distinction never awarded to a kicker. The achievement capped off a season in which Myers became the first NFL player ever to score more than 200 points in a single season, finishing with 206 points across both regular season and playoffs.
Reflecting on his journey after the game, Myers said: “The road that I’ve taken personally has built me into the person I am as a person—as a player in the NFL. It wasn’t always the easiest, but I’ll definitely always take it for what it is and build me into the man I am today.”
Myers previously set multiple program records during his college football career at Marist. After going undrafted out of college, he played in the Arena Football League before earning opportunities with teams such as the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Jets. He eventually joined Seattle and established himself as one of the league’s reliable kickers.
Ahead of this year’s Super Bowl appearance, Marist University marked Myers’ milestone with special events including a Jason Myers bobblehead giveaway to rally campus spirit.
