Marist University is set to host the Dutchess County Polar Plunge on Friday, February 27, 2026, inviting students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends to participate in a cold-water dip to support Special Olympics New York. The event will take place at the McCann Center parking lot at 3399 North Road in Poughkeepsie.
The Polar Plunge raises funds for Special Olympics New York, which offers year-round Olympic-style sports programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities at no cost to athletes or their families. Susanne O’Neil, Director of Development for the Hudson Valley Region, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to partner with Marist University on our Polar Plunge event. This fundraiser is vital to our mission as it raises critical funds and awareness that directly support athletes with intellectual disabilities by providing year-round sports training and competition at no cost to them or their families/caregivers.”
This year’s plunge will feature a new mobile plunge unit allowing the event to be held at several community locations over one weekend. At Marist University, the mobile tank will be stationed outside the McCann Center with additional activities planned inside.
Participants can register as individuals or form teams with classmates or colleagues. Advance registration is encouraged but same-day sign-ups will also be available starting at 10 a.m., ahead of the noon plunge. All participants must complete waivers before taking part.
Gretchen Murphy ’27 of North Road Communications Account Executive for Special Olympics New York commented: “As Marist students, it’s important that we give back to our community. With the first day of the Polar Plunge weekend taking place on our campus, we have a responsibility to show up and help raise awareness for this incredible organization and its dedicated athletes.”
Those joining are advised to bring towels and a change of clothes; changing areas will be provided on site. The event will proceed regardless of weather conditions unless severe weather causes university closure or delay.
Fundraising incentives include a minimum $25 donation to participate in the plunge. Those who raise $125 receive a 2026 Polar Plunge hoodie. Participants raising $500 and registering for all three days can join the Trifecta Challenge and earn a finisher medal.
Funds collected from the event support free year-round training and inclusive opportunities for athletes with disabilities.
