The New York State Department of Health has announced the addition of local public health department workers across the state to its Public Health Works! Honor Roll. This recognition highlights their ongoing efforts and commitment to safeguarding public health in communities throughout New York.
The Public Health Works! Honor Roll was created in 2007 to acknowledge the role of local public health professionals as key contributors to making New York a healthier state. According to State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald, “Local public health workers are essential to maintaining healthy communities. The success of public health initiatives depends on the dedication of workers providing care and education in the community. We honor their commitment to improving the health of all New Yorkers.”
Each year, commissioners and directors from local health departments are invited to nominate individuals or teams who have demonstrated exemplary service in delivering vital services within their communities.
The Department depends on these local agencies for a range of core services, including controlling communicable diseases, preventing chronic illnesses, conducting community health assessments, managing environmental health concerns, and ensuring preparedness for emergencies. There are 57 local health departments statewide along with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene that carry out these responsibilities.
