The New York State Department of Health has announced that it will distribute $19.5 million to 21 organizations across the state to support students pursuing health care education. The funding, part of the Healthcare Education and Life-skills Program (HELP), is administered by the Office of Healthcare Workforce Innovation. Recipients include educational institutions, hospitals, and Area Health Education Centers.

Each organization will receive up to $1 million annually for five years to help students complete their health care education programs. According to State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald, “When students and trainees withdraw from their programs, we lose future health care workers needed to provide care in our communities. These awards will help eliminate barriers to a career in health care by improving program retention, bolstering the students and our health care.”

The program is designed to provide wraparound services and interventions that assist students in achieving their career goals. These measures aim to improve retention rates among trainees and prepare them for careers in an evolving health care environment.

Additional details about the Healthcare Education and Life-skills Program and the Office of Healthcare Workforce Innovation are available on the New York State Department of Health website.
