The New York State Department of Health has launched its annual PrEP Aware Week campaign, which runs from October 19 to October 25. The initiative aims to increase awareness about sexual health and HIV prevention, focusing on the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as a key tool in reducing HIV transmission.
This year’s theme, “PrEP Revolution,” emphasizes health equity, self-determination, and visibility. According to State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald, “PrEP Revolution is a powerful theme built on the foundation that access to HIV prevention is a right that allows everyone across generations, identities and communities to make informed choices about their own health.” He added, “PrEP is up to 99% effective when used appropriately at preventing the transmission of HIV and is an important tool in accomplishing our goal to end the HIV epidemic.”
The campaign includes both in-person and virtual events throughout the week with the aim of increasing knowledge about PrEP among populations considered at higher risk for HIV. Efforts are being made to address disparities in PrEP usage by ensuring that people from all backgrounds are aware of its effectiveness and availability. The AIDS Institute continues outreach particularly among women and Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color in New York.
A notable feature this year is the inclusion of eight ambassadors representing various age groups and backgrounds across the state. The group includes both the youngest ambassador ever at age 17 and the oldest at age 78. In addition to Spanish-speaking ambassadors, there is also representation for Korean speakers with content available in both Korean and English.
A social media toolkit has been released for individuals or organizations interested in promoting PrEP awareness.
PrEP remains highly effective—up to 99 percent—at preventing sexual transmission of HIV when taken as prescribed. It is available as a daily pill or on-demand dosing schedule as well as injectable forms administered every two or six months. Medicaid, most insurance plans, and Medicare cover costs related to PrEP including appointments, lab tests, medication, counseling services, and screenings for HIV or hepatitis B. For those without coverage or needing additional support, a PrEP Assistance Program offers information about payment options along with manufacturer assistance programs.
Recent updates from the New York State Clinical Guidelines Program include new oral dosing strategies for PrEP users and recommendations for integrating recently approved injectable options into clinical practice. The guidelines encourage shared decision-making between patients and clinicians regarding available prevention methods.
HIV self-test kits are available free-of-charge through an eligibility survey process; these allow individuals to check their status privately at home.
Legislation enacted in 2024 further improves access by prohibiting insurers from discriminating against people prescribed PrEP or requiring prior authorization or copayments for coverage.
The AIDS Institute continues its commitment toward eliminating transmission rates while supporting individuals living with HIV or other sexually transmitted infections as well as members of LGBTQ+ communities.
