The Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Mediation Team reached the semi-finals in a recent Client Counseling Competition focused on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. The team, composed of students Melanie Mahoney, Lana Hubbs, and Zella Ertl, was recognized for its performance in addressing legal issues related to technology.
Alumni coach Stephanie Desiato, who also serves as Associate Director of Academic Success, Director of Community Engagement and Belonging, and Adjunct Professor at the law school, provided guidance to the team. “We are proud of our students for demonstrating the skill, professionalism, and adaptability required in today’s evolving legal landscape,” said Coach Desiato.
During the competition, participants worked through scenarios involving unauthorized AI use in published works, copyright challenges, deepfake evidence presented in child custody cases, and corporate adoption of AI into software systems. Teams were evaluated based on their ability to communicate with clients, identify legal issues, maintain professionalism, and provide client-centered advice.
The event offered students an opportunity to practice live client interviews before judges while developing skills essential for modern legal practice.
