On September 11, 2025, the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University’s Sustainable Business Law Hub hosted its third annual private environmental governance and sustainable business law scholarly workshop. The event was co-sponsored by Vanderbilt Law School’s Private Climate Governance Lab and brought together scholars focused on environmental issues to discuss new research.

Josh Galperin, Associate Professor of Law and Faculty Director of Pace Haub Law’s Sustainable Business Law Hub, organized and moderated the workshop. “The sustainable business law and private governance workshop tackled new scholarship from nine scholars in the field,” said Professor Galperin. “The goal is to bring together scholars to share new research and scholarship, and bounce ideas around to help improve that work. Sustainable business law is key to a healthier environmental future and scholarly workshops like this are essential forums for thoughtful, inspirational, and impactful change to that end.”

Participants included representatives from eight institutions as well as alumni, faculty, staff, and student scholars from Pace Haub Law. The involvement of current students provided fresh perspectives not always found in traditional academic gatherings. Professor Galperin noted, “This workshop is exemplary of the type of collaborative effort and thought-sharing that sets Pace Haub Law apart and is necessary to support a healthy environmental future. Our Sustainable Business Law Hub, along with workshops like this, does not just focus on theory, but on practice and real-life impact.”

The workshop took place one day before the annual ‘Profit & Purpose’ Sustainable Business Conference. This conference is co-hosted by Pace Haub Law with the Westchester County Association (WCA) each year. It brings together leaders from business, nonprofit organizations, and government to discuss sustainability topics such as local leadership in response to federal policy changes and links between climate change and healthcare.

The inaugural private environmental governance and sustainable business law scholarly workshop was held in spring 2023 through a partnership with Vanderbilt Law School. The Sustainable Business Law Hub at Pace serves as an incubator space for student training programs, research projects addressing global sustainability challenges, partnerships with businesses, policy development initiatives, and capacity building efforts related to private environmental governance.
