Once again, Pace University President Marvin Krislov has released his annual playlist for December, offering a selection of songs that he says moved, inspired, or energized him throughout the year. The playlist features a mix of Broadway hits, global influences, and music with a distinctly New York feel.

“For Good” by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande is included as a way to reflect on the people who have made an impact over the past year. “Because sometimes, the best way to head into a new year is to reflect on the people who changed us along the way. A Broadway classic, beautifully reborn,” said Krislov.

Other selections include “Opalite” by Taylor Swift, which Krislov describes as “mysterious, luminous, and quietly powerful—like the week before New Year’s when time stops making sense.” He also recommends “Dean Town” by Vulfpeck for students finishing finals: “Finals brain? Try this funky instrumental groove to reset your neurons. Bonus: it turns any dorm room into a jazz club.”

The playlist continues with tracks such as “Bang!” by AJR (“Chaotic, catchy, and very much finals-core. For when you’re pulling an all-nighter but still want to keep things theatrical.”) and “Subway” by Chappell Roan (“Melodramatic in the best way, with a New York soul. Feels like a C train ride from heartbreak to main character.”).

Classic songs like Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” and Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” are also featured. Krislov calls Sinatra’s song “a toast to the city that fuels our ambition and gives us bagels. Always iconic. Always in style.”

Additional picks include Motown favorite “You’re All I Need to Get By” by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell (“Pure Motown magic—soulful, clean, and timeless. Best played while making pancakes or writing that last paper.”), “Messy” by Lola Young (“For anyone navigating the beautiful chaos of being human.”), “Dear Theodosia” from Hamilton performed by Leslie Odom Jr. and Lin-Manuel Miranda (“A quieter moment from Hamilton—simple, hopeful…”), and Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” (“Existential but in a cozy-sweater way.”).

Krislov encourages students whether they are heading home or staying local after a busy semester to listen: “Whether you’re heading home, staying local, or just catching your breath after a busy semester, press play on this winter playlist. President Krislov’s picks are all about reflection, celebration, and the joy of music that connects us.”
