The Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University has expanded its Advocacy Program leadership by appointing Jared J. Hatcliffe, Esq., as Associate Director of Advocacy. In his new position, Adjunct Professor Hatcliffe will support the growth of the law school’s trial advocacy program, mentor students in litigation skills, and work with faculty to develop experiential curricula in areas such as Trial Skills, Appellate Advocacy, and Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Professor Hatcliffe brings more than 20 years of experience as a trial lawyer and educator. Since 1999, he has served as Senior Trial Counsel for the New York City Law Department, Office of the Corporation Counsel. In that role, he has handled hundreds of jury trials involving issues like civil rights, municipal liability, employment discrimination, medical malpractice, and wrongful death. He has also argued motions and appeals in both federal and state courts and has trained and mentored new trial lawyers through training programs at the Law Department.

Hatcliffe began teaching at Pace Haub Law in 2018. His courses have included Trial Advocacy, Damages, Motion Practice, and Pre-Trial Civil Litigation. He has twice received the Barbara Salken Outstanding Adjunct Faculty Award and the Loretta Musial Service Award for his work with students and contributions to the program. In addition to teaching at Pace, he has taught at Stetson University College of Law, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and Pace University’s Paralegal Certificate Program. He has also lectured at institutions including the University of Oxford.

Hatcliffe is also an author. His publications include “Trial Advocacy: The Art of Storytelling – Strategies for Winning a Trial in New York State Court” (Carolina Academic Press, 2022) and the third edition of “New York Criminal Procedure: An Analytical Approach” (with Morse and Gorman, 2022). He manages The Advocate’s Advantage, the official blog for Pace Haub Law’s Trial Advocacy Program.

“I am honored to step into this new role at Pace Haub Law and appreciative of Professor Fasulo’s confidence in me,” said Professor Hatcliffe. “Our advocacy program is built on a tradition of excellence, and I look forward to continuing to work with our students and faculty to ensure that the next generation of trial lawyers leave here with the skills, confidence, and judgment needed to succeed in the courtroom.”

Director of Advocacy Programs and Professor of Trial Practice Louis Fasulo commented on the appointment: “Professor Hatcliffe will be an excellent leader for our program. He is a proven trial lawyer, mentor, and seasoned educator. His deep litigation experience combined with his passion for teaching make him an invaluable asset for our advocacy program and a great role model for our students. This appointment will allow for continued growth of our program and provide our students with great new opportunities to prepare them for practice.”

Professor Hatcliffe holds a Juris Doctor degree from St. John’s University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Criminal Justice from St. John’s University. He is admitted to practice law in New York State as well as in the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.
