State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald has issued a statement following the recent shooting at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, where a police officer lost his life while on duty.

“We are deeply saddened by the senseless and tragic shooting at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, which claimed the life of a police officer and put our public health colleagues in harm’s way.

“Our hearts are with the loved ones of the young father who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, protecting those who serve the public good.

“It is heartbreaking that individuals who dedicate their lives to protecting and improving the health of others face not only criticism and scrutiny, but also the threat of physical violence.

“As Commissioner, I reaffirm our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health of all New Yorkers and to ensuring both the physical safety and mental well-being of our dedicated employees.

“In this difficult moment, let us stand united and, most importantly, look out for one another.”

The incident has raised concerns about workplace safety for public health professionals. Dr. McDonald emphasized ongoing efforts to protect both employees’ physical security and mental well-being during such challenging times.
