Uber has outlined its safety measures, which include driver screenings, emergency tools, technology, insurance, privacy protections, and collaboration with law enforcement to ensure safe mobility.
According to Uber’s safety page, the company conducts multi-step driver background checks that screen for impaired driving and violent offenses. These checks are rescreened annually, except for driving history reruns in New York City. Emergency assistance is available through the app, sharing live location and trip details with 911 in select cities. RideCheck uses sensors and GPS to detect unusual trip events like crashes or off-course routes and offers support. Auto insurance provides at least one million dollars in liability coverage once a ride is accepted, and 24/7 support from trained agents is accessible.
In New York, Uber complies with state requirements for transportation network companies. This includes robust criminal background checks for drivers before they transport passengers. The company enrolls drivers in the Department of Motor Vehicles License Event Notification System to track license events such as convictions, suspensions, and revocations. While transporting passengers, vehicles carry liability insurance of $1,250,000 per occurrence, and drivers are prohibited from texting while driving. These provisions aim to support passenger protection in the state.
Uber’s US Safety Report indicates that reports of serious sexual assault on the platform fell by 44 percent from 2017 to 2022. The motor vehicle fatality rate stands at 0.87 per 100 million miles traveled, below the national average. Independent research suggests that Uber reduced drunk driving deaths in the US by six percent in 2019, saving 214 lives.
Uber is a mobility platform that reimagines movement worldwide in real time by powering transportation, delivery, and earning opportunities. Founded as a ride-hailing service, it has expanded into global operations including ridesharing services like Uber Eats food delivery, freight solutions, and courier services. The company commits to sustainability by aiming for a fully zero-emission platform by 2040 and prioritizes safety through technology and partnerships.
